At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.

Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.

Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

With the launch of the new embedded motherboard 3.5”-APL form factor, Kontron is extending its new long-term available 3.5 inch portfolio to include a motherboard with the latest generation Intel® ATOM™ processor (formerly codenamed ‘Apollo Lake’). This ‘3.5” powerhouse’ has been specifically designed for performance-intensive applications and supports the extended temperature range of 0°C to +60°C. With its outstanding graphics performance, the board operates up to three independent displays. Additionally, the Kontron 3.5”-APL boasts an excellent performance-per-watt ratio and optimized Thermal Design Power (TDP). The ATX-compatible motherboard offers an extensive ecosystem, so developers can design even the most demanding systems based on standard components.

The 3.5”-APL is part of the Security Solution Product Line. The motherboard is prepared for Application Protection, License Creation, Delivery, Management and Tracking, Implementation of license models as well as the assignment of privileges and access levels.

The Kontron 3.5”-APL excels with a wide selection of interfaces. In addition, customer-specific functions can be integrated via standard extension slots such as Mini PCIe (Full and Half size) as well as Kontron’s own embedded Feature Connector. Additional features such as an eMMC Card and an mPCIe slot support Industrial Automation applicatios to further simplify and accelerate system designs. With its SIM card socket, this motherboard is also suitable for deployment in intelligent, distributed ‘Internet of Things’ for time-to-market applications.

Long-term availability of these boards ensures that OEMs can obtain the same boards for additional or replacement systems, thus, being able to efficiently manage large field deployments.
