By monitoring the exhaust-air temperature above a VME load board, it is possible to locate VME slots with cooling issues. Additionally, VME load boards provide an easy method to test the maximum current of a crate’s power supply and to verify that current-trip points behave as expected.
The VME Load Card is a high-precision diagnostic and test module designed to evaluate the performance of VME power supplies and cooling systems under realistic load conditions. By drawing defined current through the VME backplane and dissipating it as heat, the card enables accurate simulation of operating conditions within VME crates. This allows users to test maximum current capabilities, verify current-trip thresholds, and identify slots with insufficient airflow or cooling.
The module features independent front-panel switches to control load current per voltage rail, providing flexible configuration for each test scenario. It supports up to 10 A load on the +5 V and +3.3 V lines, and up to 3 A on the ±12 V rails, making it suitable for a wide range of VME and VME64x applications. LED indicators on the front panel display real-time current draw, allowing direct visual feedback during testing.
