Launching 5G Production in Germany - A Milestone for Europe's Technological Sovereignty

Together with Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and Thomas Jarzombek, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernization, Kontron officially marked the start of production on July 13 in Düsseldorf for 5G Automotive Network Access Devices (NADs) and 5G Industrial M.2 communication modules. With this new production line, Kontron reaches a key milestone: the company becomes the only provider worldwide to both develop and manufacture 5G modules in Europe - bringing the production of a strategically important semiconductor technology back from Asia to Europe. This represents a significant contribution to:

  • Europe’s technological sovereignty

  • more resilient supply chains

  • a stronger industrial base in Germany and Europe

5G communication modules are a critical enabler for future applications- from connected vehicles and smart factories to critical infrastructure and the upcoming railway standard FRMCS.

Christoph Caselitz, Executive Vice President Automotive:

“By establishing 5G production in Düsseldorf, we are sending a clear signal for ‘Made in Germany’ and a strong European technology base. The combination of development in Berlin and manufacturing in Düsseldorf enables short innovation cycles, the highest quality standards, and reliable supply for our customers.”

This investment further strengthens North Rhine-Westphalia as a leading industrial and innovation hub and enhances Europe’s competitiveness in a strategically important global market.
