Kontron 5G M.2 module IB17M-W now available in series production
High-performance 5G connectivity for industrial applications – developed and manufactured in Germany

Linz, Austria, March 5, 2026 – Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT/Embedded Computer Technology (ECT), announces the availability in series production of its new 5G M.2 Broadband Module IB17M-W. Developed in Berlin and manufactured in Düsseldorf, the module combines high performance with global 5G connectivity and is ideally suited for industrial applications, rail transport, and avionics.
Kontron’s IB17M-W 5G M.2 module has entered full series production, delivering the 3GPP Release 17 standard and data rates of up to 4.9 Gbps downlink and 0.55 Gbps uplink. With 4x4 downlink MIMO and 2x2 uplink MIMO, the module ensures stable high-performance connectivity even in challenging industrial environments.
A global SKU facilitates flexible deployment across multiple regions, streamlining international projects and certifications. The standardized M.2 3052 (Key B) form factor allows seamless integration into existing systems and supports cost-effective scaling of high-speed cellular connectivity, offering an excellent price-performance ratio in its class. Based on the Qualcomm SDX 72-0 platform, the module provides USB 3.1 Gen 2 and PCIe data interfaces. Dual SIM ensures maximum flexibility for international use.
The module’s compact design, with an extended operating temperature range from −40 °C to +85 °C, is well-suited for industrial applications. Support for L1+L5 GNSS frequencies for GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and Galileo enables high-precision positioning without the need for additional antennas. Security is a key design principle of the solution. Regular firmware and security updates ensure long-term protection against emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
Made in Germany strengthens Europe's technological sovereignty
With development in Berlin and series production in Düsseldorf, Kontron underscores its European technological expertise. Manufacturing in Germany ensures short supply chains, high quality standards and compliance with strict security and regulatory requirements, providing customers with a reliable and future-proof connectivity solution.
"The series production of our 5G M.2 broadband module underscores Europe’s manufacturing excellence while delivering a secure, future-proof solution for industrial connectivity. ‘Industrial 5G Made in Europe’ stands for quality, technological sovereignty and reliability in critical applications – attributes that are increasingly essential for resilience and cybersecurity in today’s geopolitical environment," says Hannes Niederhauser, CEO of Kontron AG.
Kontron will be presenting the IB17M-W 5G M.2 broadband module at Embedded World in Nuremberg from March 10 to 12, 2026, at its booth (Hall 3, Booth 159).
