Windows IoT vs Pro

Confused by the various Windows OS versions? We’re here to break down the differences between Windows Pro and Windows IoT to ensure you're getting the best license for your connected product.
Bottom line: if you’re running Pro on a fixed-function device, you’re overpaying and under protected.
Both Pro and IoT licenses are running the same operating system – whether that’s Windows 10, 11, Server, or any other – but there are some key differences between the versions that make IoT the superior choice for your connected device.
| Windows 10 Pro | Windows 10 IoT |
Primary Use | General Purpose | Fixed-Function |
Lifecycle | 2-3 Years, then Forced Upgrade | 10+ Years |
Support Time | 18 – 30 Months | 10 Years |
Price | $$$ | $$ |
Update Structure | Automatic | User Controlled |
Product Keys | Unique Product Keys Per Device | Only One Product Key |
The two primary differences between IoT and Pro: security and price.
Security:
If you’re operating or building fixed-function devices (think kiosks, digital signs, vending machines, etc), you know that the ability to lockdown devices is a major advantage. Locking down your devices can prevent security breaches, save customers from a bad experience with a malfunctioning device, and extend the life of your connected products.
As an example, some of the advanced lockdown features that you can utilize on Windows 10 IoT that are not available in Pro include Credential Guard, Unified Write Filter, and Shell Launcher. Our software architects are here to help you understand your options here so you can take advantage of best practices for your device use case.
Price:
Despite the additional features for businesses you get with IoT, Pro is the more expensive license. Whether you’re running tens or thousands of devices, the lower per-device cost differences add up quickly. Which means you get the same Windows operating system at a lower cost with IoT.
Some other great benefits of IoT over pro:
Control OS updates on your terms – Decide when and how operating system updates are deployed.
Simplify licensing across devices – Use a single product key for multiple devices to streamline provisioning and speed up deployment.
Eliminate unnecessary built-in apps – Exclude standard applications you don’t need, such as Cortana, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Store.
Enable device resale – Unlike many operating systems, Windows IoT Enterprise is licensed to specific physical devices rather than internal business use, allowing each device to be resold. This is especially important for OEMs building fixed-purpose IoT devices intended for external customers.
Why would anyone buy Pro?
At this point you may be wondering, if IoT is cheaper and more secure, why would anyone buy Pro? The top reasons we see OEM’s purchasing Pro is because they need licensing for general purpose devices or they simply don’t know that they have the wrong license.
If you also purchase Windows licenses for your business’ general-purpose devices – think computers, laptops, tablets, etc. – you might not even be aware that most distributors are not permitted to sell Windows IoT licenses. This leaves you paying more for a Pro license that isn’t even tailored to your needs.
Kontron is one of the few distributors authorized to sell IoT licenses in North America, and we’ve been doing it for 20+ years.
