KONTRON X-BOARD STARTERKIT WITH INTEL XSCALE® TECHNOLOGY

Evaluation kit simplifies RISC-based application development

LONG BEACH, CA -- January 16, 2006 -- Kontron, a leading embedded computer technology company, today announced the immediate availability of the Kontron X board starter kit, a new evaluation kit for developers of fanless miniature computers. It is based on the business card-sized Computer-On-Module (COM) X board, which is equipped with a highly integrated Intel® 80219 General Purpose PCI processor. The SM501 companion chip adds a wide range of interfaces to the world´s smallest COM footprint. A particular highlight is independent support for two displays.

The starter kit contains everything developers need, the module and baseboard as well as an LCD screen and driver CD, right down to the power cord. So, evaluation can begin immediately. This simplifies and accelerates the development and testing of applications on the target platform and saves the user time and money. The evaluation carrier board for the X board offers the following interfaces: 2x USB 2.0 host, 1x USB client, 1x LAN, 2x serial UART interfaces, 2x 3.3V PCI slots, 1x mini-PCI socket, AC97-Sound, plus 1 slot for Compact-Flash cards. Up to 128 MB on-board DRAM and up to 32 MB on-board Flash are already integrated on the X board. The Windows® CE 5.0 operating system is pre-installed. The Linux board support package is included on CD-ROM. Support for VxWorks and QNX is available upon request.

The Kontron X-board module is built around the Intel 80219 General Purpose PCI processor with up to 600MHz speed. It combines the Intel XScale core, which has a built-in PCI bus application bridge, with intelligent peripherals such as the Silicon motion SM501 companion chip. The X-board also has accelerated graphics and video and provides the I/O functions required in mobile multimedia devices. Other key features of the new Kontron X-board module include:
- Up to 128MB of onboard DRAM system memory
- Up to 16MB of onboard dedicated Graphics Memory
- Up to 32MB of onboard FLASH storage
- Support for CRT and LCD/TFT displays up to 1280x1024 resolution
- 10/100 Base-T Ethernet,
- USB 2.0 host and device functions

Sample X-board starter kits are available now and priced starting at $946 (actual pricing may vary).

About X-board COMs:
X-board modules, with credit card-like dimensions (67 x 49 mm), are fully PCI- and LPC- compatible. They feature essential interfaces such as USB, LAN and serial as well as outputs for sound and LCDs. Kontron´s X-board concept leaves behind older legacy interfaces such as PS/2, floppy, parallel, and the ISA-bus behind, making use of wide number of architectures. This leads to an expansion of the application fields for the new COM standard. Closing the gap between the DIMM-PC and ETX, the X-board concept is ideal for OEMs that require a performance greater than that provided by the DIMM-PC, but fewer features than those offered by the ETX standard.
