Kontron X-board™ miniKit: X-Scale Starter Kit for Mobile Mini-devices

New miniKit Takes the “Risk” Out of Developing with RISC Processors

Eching, 26.09.2006 – With the RoHS -compliant X-board miniKit, Kontron’s Embedded Modules division presents an efficient evaluation kit for ultra-compact and robust mobile applications based on the X-board™ open standard for Computer-on-Modules. At 80.5 square centimeters (115 x 70 mm), the Kontron miniKit currently is the most compact, “ready to use” baseboard for RISC based modules. With all of the necessary components included in the kit that is complete with Windows CE preinstalled on the X-board module, Kontron takes the “risk” out of developing with RISC processors.

Developers can test the application on the X-board platform with the Kontron X-board miniKit right out of the box, even if their customer-specific baseboard is not yet ready. The result is a noticeably reduced time-to-prototype through parallel development of hardware and software. In addition, developers of individual COM applications benefit from a standardized and functionally validated X-board module in two different onboard memory configurations.

The new Kontron miniKit comes standard with all of the following items:

High-performance X-board module
New X-board miniBaseboard
3.5“ QVGA touch-screen display (320 x 240 pixels),
Switchable ATX power supply unit (115 / 230 V),
Embedded-to-box adapter cable for Ethernet, RS232, USB (host and client), RS232, CF- Card and audio I/O (2 x 3.5 mm plug)
Board Support Package (on CD) for licensed Windows CE. (Linux BSP is planned)

The Kontron X-board miniKit is available for immediate delivery. To learn more about the Kontron X-board miniKit and other Kontron X-board products, please visit www.kontron.com.

About X-board
X board™ modules have the same dimensions as a business card (68 x 49 mm) and are fully PCI- and LPC-compatible. They offer all currently required interfaces, such as USB, LAN, serial interfaces, sound and LCD. Since legacy interfaces such as PS/2, floppy, parallel interface and ISA bus are already being phased out, they are no longer provided for with X-board modules. For the first time, the discontinuation of these interfaces allows, along with x86 processors, the use of ARM or RISC processor architecture as well. This leads to an expansion of the potential areas of application of this Computer-On-Module standard. The X-board design closes the gap between DIMM-PC and ETX. OEMs, who need more than DIMM-PC power and fewer features than the extensive ETX, are consequently best served with the new X-board. You can request further information on the X-board standard directly from Kontron.
