Kontron Communications Advances New Era in CompactPCI

Kontron introduces the Teknor XL-VHDS, its flag-ship carrier-class CompactPCI platform

Networks Telecom, Stockholm, Sweden, September 24, 2001 - Kontron Communications Inc., the wholly-owned operating company of Kontron Embedded Computers, today unveiled the Teknor XL-VHDS, a unique, modular concept in CompactPCI Packet-Switched Backplane platform solutions intended to offer the communications developer community nearly an unlimited number of off-the-shelf configurations. As the premier product in Kontron¿s Xtreamlink family of CompactPCI platform solutions, the Teknor XL-VHDS (Very High Density Solution) is the foremost in modular design, providing unprecedented time-to-delivery thanks in part to new switch fabric technology. Capable of supporting mission-critical carrier-class applications, this platform meets extreme High Availability standards with a feature-set that includes robust hardware, redundancy of critical components, and hot-swap functionality.

This unique design increases performance, offers unlimited virtual backplanes, increased reliability with backplane redundancy, and outstanding time to market. A system built with the Teknor XL-VHDS can gradually scale up in capabilities as needs change, and without abandoning earlier work.

"Because of its flexibility, high density and reliability, this is a truly distinctive platform solution," said Sylvie Dufour, director, product management at Kontron Communications. "OEM developers in the communications field will discover a wealth of advantages designing with the Teknor XL-VHDS. It¿s a very low long-term investment for the most advanced, high availability modular system."

Highest packaging density
Encased in a 10U chassis, the Teknor XL-VHDS offers the highest packaging of CPUs and interfaces so that each slot may have up to four 1Gbit Ethernet ports connected to a redundant switch in a PICMG 2.16-like configuration.

Add today;s CompactPCI processing power - soon to be functional beyond GHz speed -with strong airflow, efficient n+1 power supplies and the highest performing single slot Teknor CompactPCI single board computers, and developers today are empowered to build the highest density and best-in-class server configuration available.

Migration to Switch Fabric configurations
The chief benefit of this breakthrough design is the vast improvement to I/O throughput for systems built today and tomorrow. With its high modularity, OEM developers may combine technologies like 66MHz/64bit CompactPCI SBCs, PICMG 2.16, H.110 telephony bus, custom technologies and switch fabric, all in one system.

High Availability and system management
The XL-VHDS has been designed for 5-nines system availability and more. Its robust hardware design, redundancy of critical components, system and platform management mechanisms are integrated into the XL-VHDS communications and computing infrastructure to ensure maximum continuous service regardless of any internal system faults or failures.

This is simply the most economical solution for the best performance for Internet infrastructure and communications applications that depend on high-end, carrier-class grade solutions. Its exceptional modularity makes it possible for designers to quickly construct a multitude of high-performance machines, from media severs and IP-PBXs to core Internet routers and computer telephony softswitches.
