At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron Announces Key Design Win with Global Touch Technology Leader
Revenue of 15 to 20 million dollar per year expected
Eching, Munich, August 27, 2008 – Kontron today announced a new $15- $20 million design win to serve the needs of one of the largest American industry’s leading touch technology manufacturers. Kontron, the leader in embedded computing technology, has worked with this global touch screen technology leader to develop the appropriate solution for their high-profile, multi-function family of touch solutions that are used in diverse industrial applications. These include, but not limited to: medical, Point of Sale/ Point of Information, retail, transportation, automation, and gaming.
This design win for Kontron represents approximately $15-$20 million in annual revenues potential initially and is poised for explosive growth in the near term future as these products gain market share for the applications they serve. Production of these boards is already up and running at Kontron’s facilities in Penang, Malaysia.
