At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

FieldWorks Partners with IBM Canada
Eden Prairie, Minn., September 3, 1997 - FieldWorks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FWRX), a leading maker of application-specific computing solutions for demanding field environments, has signed an agreement with IBM Canada, whereby FieldWorks will supply IBM Canada with computer solutions for resale worldwide.
"This strategic partnership with IBM strengthens both companies´ abilities to serve our customers with total mobile solutions," says Dale Szymborski, FieldWorks marketing manager.
The agreement will broaden IBM Canada´s customer audience to include field professionals needing extremely reliable application-specific mobile computers. It is in line with IBM Canada´s strategy of providing enterprise-wide information systems. In turn, IBM Canada´s leadership position will help FieldWorks build market share in key markets.
IBM Canada will sell FieldWorks computers and computer system solutions under the FieldWorks label.
FieldWorks´ products include the FW5000 Series II notebook and the FW7000 Series laptop. With four bays and two serial ports, the rugged, modular notebook is a popular solution for utility and law enforcement in-vehicle computing. It is capable of providing GPS mapping, computer-aided dispatching, high-speed data communications, and high-resolution graphics technologies for digital fingerprinting and mugshots. And it is upgradeable. With multiple ISA and PCI card slots, the FW7000 is the industrys only laptop solution to field and harsh-environment computing applications requiring desktop expansion cards, such as applications in data acquisition, test and measurement, or video teleconferencing.
