Kontron puts Intel® Xeon® Processor D-1500 Product Family at the core of its Hosting Data Center and Telco ‘NFV/SDN’ Cloud Infrastructure

Kontron brings low power, ‘Big Core’ density to SYMKLOUD Series

Augsburg, GERMANY, November 10, 2015Kontron, a leading global provider of embedded computing technology (ECT), today announced a major design enhancement to its 10GbE SYMKLOUD converged modular servers that will enable Kontron to expand its market penetration in both the cloud hosting provider and communication service provider (CSP) markets.

To better respond to growing operating costs and accommodate demanding network workloads, service providers from both segments are under increasing pressures to deploy new converged infrastructure that feature increased compute density at lower power envelopes.

The Kontron solution is for SYMKLOUD to support up to nine modular servers, each with a 4- or 8-core processor from the Intel® Xeon® Processor D-1500 product family.

Higher Density of Concurrent Workloads Per SYMKLOUD
A 16 core count version, (available in Q1, 2016 timeframe) equates to 144 physical cores in a single 2U enclosure, or, up to 3,024 cores in a 42U rack. Available immediately, Kontron offers two hot-swappable, low-power 10GbE modular servers – MSP8040: Intel® Xeon® processor D-1527, 4C; and MSP8041: Intel® Xeon® processor D-1548, 8C.

For hosting and cloud providers, the SYMKLOUD upgrade is an effective counter to inefficient data center scaling, which consumes valuable real estate and increases overall costs. Targeted application workloads are at the data center edge, including: dedicated hosting, dynamic web serving, warm storage, and edge routing and security.

Kontron has initiated the process for SYMKLOUD, featuring the Intel® Xeon® processor D-1500 product family, to be VMware certified for intelligent and automated data center virtualization.

In the telecoms provider space, CSPs with carrier cloud deployments that include network functions virtualization (NFV) can optimize their infrastructure to efficiently roll-out new services at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) by running a higher density of virtualized network functions (VNFs) with less power. This is backed by server-class reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features and tighter DPDK integration.

More Intelligence and Reduced BOM
The Intel® Xeon processor D-1500 product family is a 64-bit SoC and the first based on Intel® Xeon processor technology that combines the performance and advanced intelligence of Intel® Xeon processors with the size and power savings of a SoC.

Included are two integrated 10GbE ports and integrated IOs (PCIe, USB, SATA), with support for error-correcting code memory, Intel® Virtualization Technology and Intel® Advanced Encryption Standard-New Instructions (Intel® AES-NI). Another key feature is the capacity support for 128 GB of DDR4 memory, increasing the number of ‘users per server’, ideal for networking and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications.

About Symkloud Converged Modular Servers
Bridging the gap between telco networks and IT/cloud data centers, the SYMKLOUD series of x86 commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platforms are the convergence of High Availability (HA) and modular compute (up to 9 “mix and match” x86 servers), storage, and dual 10GbE intelligent switching into a compact, short-depth footprint. With the growing trend for hyperconverged hardware and software solutions, Kontron works with numerous software partners to provide cloud-ready open platforms with hardware-accelerated support for software defined networking.
