ThinkIO

ThinkIO - Compact and Rugged Embedded IPC
ThinkIO is dedicated to OEMs acting in industrial, building and energy automation markets as well as in transportation. All ThinkIOs have a similar feature set regarding "standard PC interfaces", industrial features, field bus and flexible I/O connectivity. The open and adaptable ThinkIO is utilized either as Embedded IPC with software development on different operating systems or optionally as an IEC61131-3 compliant SoftPLC. The integrated platform significantly reduces time to market, allowing OEMs to focus on their core competence and save resources.

Image processing in the fast lane: tire tread check at 120 km/h
It can measure tire tread patterns contact-free in moving traffic - reproducible even at speeds of up to 120 km/h. The computing required for this high-speed image capturing is carried out by the Kontron’s DIN rail ThinkIO-Duo. The winning features of the system are the multi-core computing performance and its robust and silent design plus a wide range of interface options, with which the image processing system can be integrated into other applications.

Windmill with ThinkIO
The demand for using renewable energy is constantly growing and wind energy is an increasingly popular choice. With the ThinkIO industrial PC, Kontron offers a powerful and reliable control solution that is now being used by suppliers of wind turbines. The ThinkIO-Duo operates without rotating parts such as hard drives and fans and also without batteries. This makes it completely maintenance-free and ideal for use in space-limited areas or where access for maintenance personnel is difficult such as, for example, in the nacelle at the top of the wind turbine. The ThinkIO communicates continuously with the peripheral control elements, such as the wind tracking mechanism and active blade pitching system, and ensures that each system parameter is set for optimal wind turbine operation in all weather conditions. The Kontron control system also constantly receives information on grid values such as voltage, current and frequency. This enables the system to react immediately to voltage or frequency changes and safely shut down until the deviations are once again within the range of tolerance.
ThinkIO in action: Special Applications

Dispatcher Operation Control System of the Moscow Monorail Transport System
In 1999, there was CJSC “Moscow Monorail” established and the program “Moscow Monorail Transport” approved which is aimed at developing a monorail transport system in Moscow, with the participation of the Government of Moscow and Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Moscow Institute for Heat Engineering”.
Moscow Monorail Transport System (MMTS) – is not just a new type of the rolling-stock, but it’s a new spin in the field of automation control of complex transport systems. In the framework of the project RTSoft company developed and implemented dispatch control system (DCS) at the first length of the railroad between the stations “Sergei Eizenschtein Street” and “Timiryazevskaya Metro Station”. Moscow monorail is a sophisticated technical complex which is composed of a line with 12 passenger stations, electro rolling-stock (ERS), a train shed with a transborder (a mechanism for leading trains out to the line), railroad substations, automated track switches, railroad safety devices, communication systems and many others. Dispatch control system is used to control such a sophisticated complex.

Theo Hell Industrieelektrik Uses Kontron System for Monitoring and Control of Water Facilities
Every second, 100,000 liters of water roars through the two 22 metric ton valves of the Eifel Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel, the second largest reservoir in Germany with a capacity of 200 million cubic meters. The Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel belongs to the Wasserverband Eifel-Rur (WVER), which operates a total of six dams with a capacity of 300 million cubic meters in the northern Eifel. They serve primarily as fl ood control, but are also used for the drinking water supply and as a local recreation area. The Rurtalsperre is the largest of the six reservoirs and, with the Urfttalsperre, forms a connected lake region which lies, for the most part, in the Eifel national park. And when it came time to update the electronics of this massive system, Kontron was chosen as a partner along with its Think IO system. The Kontron Think IO was chosen because it is a maintenance-free system with lots of connectivity potential. That, paired with Kontron’s dedication to service, combined for a great fi t to the WVER project.
