BOSTON -- September 12, 2005 -- Kontron, a leading embedded computer technology company, today announced the immediate availability of the Kontron X-boardGP8 Computer-On-Module (COM) built around the Intel(R) 80219 processor based on the Intel XScale(R) microarchitecture. The X-boardGP8 is the second Intel XScale technology-based module in Kontron's X-board(TM) product family of small embedded form factor modules. The highly integrated X-boardGP8 is designed to serve the unique needs of intelligent I/O applications.
Kontron has a strong commitment to the embedded and communications market segments with its multi-million dollar investments in the next generation of communications and embedded platforms such as ETXexpress (COM Express), AdvancedTCA(R), AdvancedMC(TM) and MicroTCA(TM).
In the past several quarters, Kontron has rolled out one of the widest portfolios of communications and embedded solutions in the industry, ranging from offerings of ETXexpress (COM Express) Computer-On-Modules, state-of-the-art AdvancedTCA processors, switches and AdvancedMC-carrier boards, processor, storage, and I/O-AdvancedMC modules, as well as CompactPCI processor blades
Kontron has a long trajectory as a leader in the growing sector of COMs and as the creator of the ETX COM form factor, Kontron was a pioneer in the creation of the COM Express specification. ETX express modules, along with the X-board, allow developers to have access to a scalable platform across different processor generations. By using Kontron modules OEMs can in upgrade their systems without having to do modifications to their carrier boards.
The Kontron X-boardGP8 COM is built around the Intel 80219 General Purpose PCI processor in either 400MHz or 600MHz speeds. It combines the Intel XScale core, which has a built-in PCI bus application bridge, with intelligent peripherals. The X-boardGP8 also has accelerated graphics and video and provides the I/O functions required in mobile multimedia devices. Other key features of the new Kontron X-boardGP8 module include:
- Up to 128MB of onboard DRAM system memory
- Up to 16MB of onboard dedicated Graphics Memory
- Up to 32MB of onboard FLASH storage
- Support for CRT and LCD/TFT displays up to 1280x1024 resolution
- 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, AC97 Audio Codec, USB 2.0 and more
Sample X-boardGP8 modules are available now and priced starting at approximately $230 in small quantities (actual pricing may vary based on volume).
For a live demonstration of the Kontron X-boardGP8, please visit Intel booth #809 at the Embedded Systems Conference exhibition in Boston, September 13-14.
About X-board(TM) COMs:
X-board modules, with credit card-like dimensions (67 x 49 mm), are fully PCI- and LPC- compatible. They feature essential interfaces such as USB, LAN and serial as well as outputs for sound and LCDs. Kontron's X-board concept leaves behind older legacy interfaces such as PS/2, floppy, parallel, and the ISA-bus behind, making use of wide number of architectures. This leads to an expansion of the application fields for the new Computer-On-Module (COM) standard. Closing the gap between the DIMM-PC and ETX, the X-board concept is ideal for OEMs that require a performance greater than that provided by the DIMM-PC but fewer features than those offered by the ETX standard. For additional information about the X-board standard, contact Kontron.
"Kontron's introduction of this second X-board design built around an Intel IOP processor broadens the uses of Intel XScale technology to include a diverse array of embedded computing applications -- from telecommunications to test, measurement and more. Kontron has a strong commitment to providing Intel based leading-edge, modular-based open standard solutions in the communications and embedded markets," said Matthias Huber, Director of the Kontron Embedded Modules division in Northern California's Silicon Valley.
"The Intel 80219 processor is a family member in Intel's broad array of processor offerings that serve a wide range of embedded applications requiring high performance and low power in a tightly integrated environment," said Mike Wall, General Manager, Intel Storage Components Division. "Embedded computing technology companies such as Kontron that deliver innovative solutions based on Intel 80219 processor allow OEMs to accelerate their time to market and reduce development costs."
Kontron also announced that it has been promoted to Premier level membership in the Intel Communications Alliance. The Intel Communications Alliance is a community of communications and embedded developers and solution providers committed to the development of modular, standards-based solutions based on Intel technologies. Kontron has been an Associate Member of the Intel Communications Alliance since the Alliance's inception in 2003. Previous to that Kontron had belong to several Intel programs intended for embedded and communications market segments.
"We are extremely proud to be a Premier Member of the Intel Communications Alliance and be in a stronger position to better serve our customers with Intel based solutions," said Hannes Niederhauser, Chief Executive Officer of Kontron AG. "With access to leading-edge Intel technologies and the support we obtain from Intel, we will be able to further accelerate customer design projects for the embedded, communications, wireless and wireline network infrastructure. Backed by our extensive investments in the embedded and communications markets, Kontron will continue to strive, grow, and remain a leader within the industry."
