PCI-956: slot SBC with Intel® Pentium® M 2.13 GHz and 915 GM chipset

Flexible I/O expansion with long-term availability

Eching, Germany – October 18, 2005: With the new PCI-956 slot SBC, Kontron Embedded Computers introduces a new, PICMG 1.0 compatible board, equipped with Intel® Pentium® M 760 and the mobile Intel® 915 GM Express chipset. This board’s attractive features include its energy-saving design, assured long-term availability, and the CRT and LVDS graphics based on the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 architecture integrated into the chipset,. The Celeron® M 320 with 1.3 GHz is offered as an alternative to the Intel Pentium M with 2.13 GHz. The SO-DIMM slot manages up to 2 GB of DDR2-SDRAM. Available interfaces include six USB 2.0 ports, Fast Ethernet, two serial ports, and one parallel port. Additional interfaces can be implemented as needed by the customer via the mini-PCI connector. Storage media are connected by four fast SATA150 and two UltraDMA/33/66/100 EIDE interfaces, as well as an optional CompactFlash adapter. Besides industrial applications, the board would typically be used in data commmunications, data storage, server applications, image processing, and medical industries.

A variety of in-house expansion assemblies are available for the mini-PCI slot, ranging from Dual Ethernet, FireWire, and WLAN to Bluetooth and analog modems and SCSI adapters, which makes the customer-specific design of the slot SBC particularly flexible.

The PICMG 1.0-compliant full-size slot SBC communicates via passive backplanes with expansion assemblies over the PCI (32 bit/33 MHz) and ISA busses. Software support is offered for Windows XP, XP Server, and 2000, as well as Linux.

The PCI-956 has an almost identical feature set to the PCI-955, which was introduced in the spring of 2005 but the 64bit/66Mhz PCI, Gigabit-Ethernet, DVI and audio functions, which are still rather expensive, were left out in order to be able to offer the high processor performance at a particularly reasonable price. Therefore, if this assembly reaches the limits of its performance, there is an alternative already available.

About PICMG 1.0 compatible slot CPU assemblies
PICMG 1.0-compliant CPU boards boast a simple system configuration, which is limited to the essential: computing power. There is no front side hot-swap or screwless mounting here. PICMG 1.0 also works without expensive pressfit connectors for the slot board, and leads the I/Os directly from the circuit board. The passive carrier board is equipped with wired or SMT connectors. Slot SBC configurations are attractively priced CPU assemblies for more complex image and data communication applications which are, as a rule, implemented through usually customer-specific expansion assemblies: four PCI-I/O boards can be managed directly by one PICMG 1.0 board.
