KONTRON EXHIBITS MOST EXTENSIVE PRODUCT RANGE OF OPEN MODULAR BUILDING BLOCKS AT SUPERCOMM 2005

Kontron showcased second generation of its AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC modular platforms designed for a myriad of wireless and wireline network infrastructure applications

CHICAGO, IL - June 9, 2005 - Kontron, a market leader in embedded computer technology, today announced that the Kontron exhibit of open standard, modular platforms at Supercomm 2005 was an enormous success, with triple the number of attendees visiting the Kontron booth over last year. The source of the increase was primarily driven by increased market awareness and what proved to be a showcase of the fullest product mix of AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC platforms on the telecom network infrastructure market today.

"What is crucial to the continued success of our product portfolio is the interoperability between all Kontron AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC platforms," said Benoit Robert, Executive Director, product development, telecom, at Kontron. "Kontron has accumulated extensive experience in this area, which has enabled it to take a long lead ahead of other platform vendors."

Kontron has nearly 20 different open modular platforms to offer, consisting of a number of processor AdvancedTCA blades and hub boards, AdvancedMC carrier boards, plus an expanding spectrum of AdvancedMC modules that extend the AdvancedTCA product line with additional CPU processing power, 10 GbE uplinks, and storage (SATA) capabilities. Before the end of 2005, Kontron will further expand the AdvancedMC product line with a mix of modules featuring I/O and SETS functionalities.

"Kontron has made a major commitment towards developing AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC platforms, designed by a team of nearly 100 R&D engineers located at three Kontron sites in North America and EMEA," said Tom Meyer, Director, Kontron Communications Division. "We will continue to accelerate the development of leading edge, state-of-the-art communication building blocks that provide numerous cost and resource benefits to Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) and System Integrators (SIs) planning to build next generation, wireless and wireline applications."

AMC Everywhere market strategy
Also very well received during Supercomm was the Kontron approach to make all of its AdvancedTCA platforms "AMC Everywhere" enabled, offering support for AdvancedMC modules in its processor, hub and carrier products. This is a major factor in providing TEMs with unprecedented flexibility in the design of new, IMS-based applications, as well as increase economies of scale by freeing up valuable AdvancedTCA system slots for other payload blades.

AdvancedMC modules are the smallest Field Replaceable Units (FRU) on the market that are hot swappable and support the RASM concept of "Reliability, Availability, Serviceability, and Maintainability". Ultimately for Service Providers and Carriers, this translates into a significantly lower OPEX with easy upgrades in the field, reduced risk for the introduction of new subscriber services, and the ability to expand networks.

AdvancedMCs are also proving to be an attractive solution for proprietary form factor base boards. For example legacy telecom systems can be outfitted with COTS AdvancedMCs to enable a smooth migration from purely proprietary technology to a 100 per cent AdvancedTCA system in the future.

Faster-Go-To-Market strategy
Kontron shortens the application design process by ensuring that each open modular building block is fully interoperable and designed to be both the right technology and the right architecture in mind to suit any development needs. Pre-integrated and application ready right out-of-the-box, Kontron open modular solutions are customizable and also feature best-in-class carrier-grade software such as MontaVistaâ Linuxâ Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), and hot-standby Solid CarrierGradeâ data manager from Solid Information Technology. This complements Kontrons existing offering of Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI v1.5) firmware, Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) support, and operating system and applications software.
