Kontron ETX® 3.0 Computer-On-Module ETX®-OH extends application lifecycles with the AMD Embedded G-Series

Superior graphics features combined with energy-efficient 64-bit processor technology

Eching/Nuremberg, Germany, November 22, 2011 – At the SPS/IPC/DRIVES trade show in Nuremberg, Kontron (Hall 7, stand 306) has announced the new ETX® 3.0 Computer-on-Module ETX®-OH with AMD's highly integrated, energy-efficient embedded G-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APU). With its powerful 64-bit multi-core processor technology and programmable graphics unit that supports DirectX11 on one die, the Kontron ETX®-OH is an ideal solution for applications that require increased graphic capabilities and provides a simplified migration path for systems that utilize legacy modules. With the Kontron ETX® 3.0 Computer-on-Module ETX®-OH, OEMs get a solution that can directly replace existing PCI/ISA-based modules and extend the lifecycle of these applications through 2018 allowing designers to maximize the return on investment for ETX-based solutions.

Based on the AMD A55E Controller Hub, this latest addition to the Kontron ETX® 3.0 Computer-on-Module family covers a wide performance range with the AMD T40E, T40R, T52R and T56N single- and dual core processors in order to address exact application requirements. The Kontron ETX®-OH offers superior HD graphics capabilities with support for the latest 3D graphics with DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1. It also enables brilliant and smooth playback of high resolution BluRay and video streams of up to 1080p thanks to the integrated Unified Video Decoder. Also, it is the first ETX® module that offers native support for DP++ (DisplayPort/HDMI/DVI) onboard, allowing the latest display technology to be connected without changes to the carrierboard, making upgrades simple and fast. Additionally, Kontron offers a dedicated graphics adapter from DisplayPort to LVDS. In combination with the native dual-channel LVDS via the ETX® connectors, the Kontron ETX®-OH can be used to control two digital displays independently. Through the use of the ETX® 3.0 Computer-on-Module, PCI and ISA-based applications can be updated to latest dual-display technology with HD content. This comes together to make the new Kontron ETX®-OH the ideal solution for applications in the infotainment, kiosk and medical markets where high performance and low energy consumption are required.

The feature set in detail
The Kontron ETX® 3.0 Computer-on-Module ETX®-OH is based on the energy-efficient AMD Embedded G-Series APU and Fusion PCH. The performance is scalable from the single core processors, AMD T40R (1x1.0 GHz) and T52R (1x 1.5 GHz), up to the AMD dual core processors, T40E (2x 1.0 GHz) and T56N (2x 1.65 GHz). With these processor options, OEMs can find the ideal configuration tailored to their individual demands. All versions support up to 4 GByte of DDR3 system memory, minimizing latency even in memory intensive applications. With the integrated AMD Radeon™ HD 6310 / HD 6250 graphics, the Kontron ETX®-OH can control several displays via the 24-Bit dual channel LVDS (1900 x 1080), DP++ (DisplayPort/DVI/HDMI) (2560 x 1600) and VGA (2560 x 1600), enabling full digital multi-screen solutions, required for today’s medical and gaming applications. Sound output for multimedia applications is enabled via high-definition audio. Applications that connect to fast storage media, such as BluRay players or extremely robust and fast SSDs, benefit from the two SATA connections with 3 Gbit/s that enable fast transfer rates and speedy loading processes. An optional on-board SSD-flash is also available, resulting in space-saving integration of rugged storage media without the need for changes to the system design. Among the other available interfaces are Fast Ethernet, USB 2.0 and 2 optional on-board microUSB ports. All the standard ETX® 3.0 interfaces are integrated including PCI, ISA and LPC. Even legacy applications running with ISA extensions can be upgraded by using the new features of the Kontron ETX®-OH without further adjustments. High-level data security is enabled through the use of the optional onboard Trusted Platform Module (TPM 1.2). With ACPI 3.0 and the suspend mode S0/S3/S4/S5/S5 Eco the new ETX® 3.0 module offers excellent energy efficiency and, in comparison to older modules, minimizes power consumption when the systems is idle.

The new Kontron ETX®-OH supports Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows XP, Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows Embedded Compact 7 and Linux. First samples will be available in January.
