Kontron ensures long-term availability of SBCs and COMs by committing to offer discontinued VIA Eden™ processors until the end of 2007

Kontron’s commitment includes customers who previously bought from its competitors

Eching, Germany, March 9, 2006 – By deciding to ensure it can offer long-term availability for VIA Eden processors, which have been discontinued by the manufacturer, Kontron safeguards its customers’ investment in RoHS-compliant boards and Computer-On-Modules until at least the end of 2007. This applies to all SBCs and COMs based on VIA Eden processors with 300/400/800 MHz and 1GHz. This commitment includes customers who previously bought assemblies from the competition. This strengthens Kontron’s position as a reliable partner offering long-term availability embedded computer technology, independent of the processor manufacturers.

“Our goal is to make our customers ever more independent of the processor suppliers, even if this requires a large cash investment,“ says Dirk Finstel, CTO of the Embedded Modules division. In this way, customers receive the highest availability and thus the security that an investment is safeguarded over the long term. The system solutions hardest hit by the VIA discontinuation are mostly those with cost-sensitive designs, due to the economical pricing of their processors. They would be particularly affected, because redesigns have a significantly greater effect on unit prices than in higher-priced solutions, where the cost allocation has a much smaller percentage influence on the price.

Kontron’s extended lifetime support includes single-board computers based on PC/104 and JRex 3.5“, ETX computer-on-modules, and PISA slot assemblies, as well as the flat panel CPU board ePanel-C3.
