At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron Communications Takes Vanguard Position with New Family of Compact PCI PSB Platforms
CompactPCI packet-switched backplane - a superior solution
Montreal, Canada, September 6, 2001 - PICMG 2.16-compliant Xtreamlink platforms are designed to significantly open up the communication bottleneck found in todays cPCI subsystems. This is accomplished by offloading packet data from the shared cPCI bus architecture and onto a fault-tolerant, high speed, switched 10/100/1000 Ethernet-based network architecture. As a result, throughput performance can be drastically enhanced for certain applications without affecting cPCI standards, such as the H.110 telephony bus, and its power and hot-swap feature-set.
In the coming days, Kontron Communications plans to unveil two new members of its Xtreamlink product line, each one PICMG 2.16 compliant and offering the scalablity developers require for mission-critical datacom / telecom applications.
