Kontron announces support for Freescale QorIQ® family of communication processors on AdvancedMCs™

Kontron extends its portfolio of low power and high performance AdvancedMCs™ with dual-core, quad-core and eight-core Freescale Power Architecture® processors

Eching, Germany, February 25, 2011 – Kontron today announced support for Freescale Semiconductor’s advanced QorIQ® family of communication processors, which deliver best-in-class energy efficiency and a broad range of performance and integration capabilities on AdvancedMC™ processor modules. With these two Power Architecture® based communication processor platforms, designed for networking and control applications with general processing needs, Kontron extends its portfolio of single-width midsize AdvancedMCs both for low-power and high-performance packet processing applications.

The QorIQ P2020 based Kontron AdvancedMC™ processor module AM4120 is scheduled for release in Q2 2011. In addition, upcoming QorIQ® based Kontron AdvancedMCs will enable OEMs and system integrators to take advantage of the highly integrated and scalable QorIQ® processors on MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA platforms. These platforms deliver advanced packet processing capabilities combined with highly flexible processing and I/O functionalities in a commercial–off-the-shelf configuration. Customers benefit from reduced development efforts, optimized time-to-market and scalability for network-centric applications based on modular and standard-based AdvancedTCA® and MicroTCA™ platforms.

"The Freescale QorIQ P2020 extends our low power portfolio of AdvancedMC processor modules for applications that require dual-core performance and low power consumption," said Dirk Finstel, CTO at Kontron. "Additionally, the QorIQ processor family will extend the high-performance multi-core segment of our AMC portfolio. With up to eight cores, the QorIQ processors are extremely flexible and can be configured to meet many system application needs. Comprehensive virtualization capabilities, as well as the ability to independently boot and reset each core, provides the user with significant flexibility in partitioning between control, datapath and application processing. It also simplifies consolidation of functions previously spread across multiple discrete processors onto a single device."

"Built on our high-performance QorIQ processors, the new Kontron AdvancedMC modules deliver outstanding performance, power, reliability, security and quality of service," said Lisa Su, senior vice president and general manager for Freescale Semiconductor’s Networking and Multimedia Group. "Developers creating solutions with QorIQ technology also benefit from a vibrant support ecosystem, including optimized tools, operating systems and network protocol stacks to help address the unique development challenges of multi-core architectures and speed time to market."
Samples of the Kontron AdvancedMC™ processor module AM4120 will be available in Q2 2011. Full production is scheduled for Q3 2011. Additional Freescale-based AdvancedMCs™ will be available in Q4 2011.
