At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron AG appoints Jens Wiegand as Chief Technology Officer
Eching near Munich, 21st May 2014 – Kontron AG, a leading global provider of Embedded Computer Technology (ECT), has appointed Jens Wiegand (51) as Chief Technology Officer effective 21st May 2014. He will lead the new global function Innovation and Technology. At the same time, the Research and Development activities of the company will be integrated with the Corporate Software division in order to further improve Kontron’s offering of integrated solutions for its customers.
Jens Wiegand has more than 25 years of R&D experience in various vertical markets, the ECT industry and the embedded software sector. He is also highly experienced in managing global businesses in the ECT sector and has a wide-ranging network of contacts in the global high-tech sector. After spending many years in various management positions at Force Computer (later Motorola), Jens Wiegand served in a number of executive roles in the Services EMEA and Strategic Solutions divisions of Windriver. In his last position as Vice President Industrial Solutions and Worldwide Strategic Marketing, he made a significant contribution to raising revenues in the vertical businesses.
