DDC selects Kontron COBALT to maximize computing performance in its new high-density Rugged Avionics Interface Computer

Kontron and DDC sign MOU outlining preferred supplier relationship combining best-in-class embedded computing and defense data bus connectivity platforms

Augsburg, Germany May 5, 2015 – Kontron, a leading provider of Embedded Computing Technology, announced today its COBALT ruggedized high-performance computer has been selected as the preferred small form factor system for Data Device Corporation’s (DDC) Rugged Avionics Interface Computer targeted at high density multi-protocol airborne embedded applications.  The COBALT platform was selected for providing a robust, IP67 fully sealed and compact system that delivers optimal computing performance for DDC’s aerospace and defense solutions.  Using COTS-based COBALT, DDC is able to better satisfy the growing need for connectivity, flexibility and high density multi-protocol requirements in a small form factor rugged enclosure.

“Kontron’s COBALT system brings to DDC a scalable integrated building block architecture for rugged avionics applications, while also providing a custom-fit solution that permits quick deployment of new systems as well as system upgrades,” said Eric Forstner, Vice President Data Bus Solutions, DDC “Flexibility and reduced time to market are key challenges for our customers.  Leveraging COBALT enables us to exceed their expectations with a configurable platform capable of meeting a broad range of I/O and network communications requirements.”

Kontron’s highly scalable COBALT platform is based on the company’s COM Express® Type 6 Computer-on-Modules (COMs), weighs less than six pounds and offers efficient thermal management in a small 8.5 (W) x 5.5 (D) x 3.9 (H)-inch form factor.  The complete COBALT platform includes a rugged carrier board, power module, housing and appropriate I/O connectors in a fully-enclosed, fanless system. Its compact footprint and power-to-performance optimization make COBALT ideal for applications requiring high performance, reduced size-weight-power in an environmentally rugged design. The design flexibility COBALT affords ensures fast time-to-market for a broad variety of military, avionics, mining, smart grid, homeland security, rail transportation, and oil and gas applications.

“We value DDC’s long-standing reputation in the avionics market.  Their leadership position aligns well with Kontron’s priorities in serving this growing and evolving arena.  With our deep market knowledge, Kontron stands ready to actively support DDC with COBALT and our other proven systems.  Our goal is to give DDC a competitive advantage from the ability to use and reuse platforms, enabling sophisticated avionics performance while reducing long-term costs and development resources for its customers,” said Eric Sivertson, Executive Vice President, Avionics, Transportation, and Defense (ATD) Business Unit, Kontron.
